Volcom During the march dumps of 1991, Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall set off on a snowboard trip that would forever change their lives. Tucker had just been laid off of work and jumped in the car on a routine Tahoe trip to visit Nathan Fletcher and Mark Gabriel. After riding four days of fresh, Richard called work with the excuse that they were snowed in and extended his stay. For more than a week, they awoke every morning with two new feet of snow. It was their first real experience riding powder and the new obsession wouldn't stop.
Two weeks later Richard quit his job to take some time off and snowboard. He and Tucker had also talked of starting a clothing company during the Tahoe trip but nothing was really final. Later that spring, the two came up with the idea of starting a riding company based around the three sports they enjoyed. With an initial $5000 from Richard's dad, they started the process. First the name and then the stone . Volcom was born.
The Volcom idea would incorporate a major philosophy of the times, "youth against establishment". This energy was an enlightened state to support young creative thinking. Volcom was a family of people not willing to accept the suppression of the established ways . This was a time when snowboarding and skateboarding was looked down on. The U.S. was in a recession, there were riots in LA and the Gulf War. Change was in the air. Nirvana and Pearl Jam expressed it the best.
For the first two years, Richard and Tucker traveled around the world on wild journeys with friends riding whatever they could. The business side of things was minimal. The headquarters were set up in Newport in Richard's bedroom and all sales were run out of tucker's bedroom in Huntington. The two knew nothing about how to make clothes but that didn't matter. It was all about spirit and creativity. Clothing sales for the first year were $2600.
Since those wild beginnings, the Volcom Stone has spread slowly across the world. The Company has matured internally but continues to run off the same philosophy it started with. The Volcom thinking now flows through its art, music, films, athletes and clothing….

RVCA RVCA is the brainchild of company Founder and Creative Director, PM Tenore. Transcending the boundaries of traditional action sports apparel, RVCA is a design-driven lifestyle brand free from passing trends. Appearing as a natural on the shelves of boutiques as on those of a local skate shop, RVCA is brought together by a group of likeminded individuals from various subcultures, a collaboration of sorts, a lifestyle within itself. PM Tenores intention from the very beginning has been to create a platform for RVCA, which combines art, music, fashion and a modern lifestyle in an original way. At the forefront of this vision has been RVCAs Artist Network Program (ANP) a venture established to showcase the talents of accomplished as well as unknown artists who inspire our generation and push the boundaries of creative excellence. Established to promote the genuine integrity of RVCAs subcultures while simultaneously giving back to the community, RVCA in essence is redefining the way the market views art and fashion as represented through the balance of opposites and how they coexist: water, oil; air, land; destruction, industrialization; art, science; foreign, domestic; order, anarchy; past, present. For RVCA, it is about today, tomorrow and life as the big picture. It is about inspiring our generation, providing something of substance and culture and above all doing it with integrity and as a united family, a close-knit community.

O'Neill O'Neill, the original Californian surf, snow and lifestyle brand, was founded in 1952 when a young man named Jack ONeill took his unstoppable passion for surfing and used it to beat Mother Nature at her own game. Pioneering the worlds first neoprene wetsuit, Jack had successfully found a way to extend his surf sessions in the bone-chilling breaks of Northern California. He opened up the garage doors to his first surf shop in Santa Cruz soon after. While many things have changed since those humble beginnings, Jacks initial vision of producing functional and innovative boardriding products continues to lie at the core of everything the company does. ONeills set of core values innovation in style and technology has seen the brand devote itself wholeheartedly to the evolution of action sports. From the first ever neoprene wetsuit and surf leash, to the worlds first stitchless boardshorts and range of groundbreaking wearable electronics, ONeills spirit of innovation will always drive the company forwards. Today, ONeill can be found the world over. In touch with its rich heritage and the universal stoke of boardriding culture, ONeill will always be committed to progressing that evolution and growing its reputation as one of the worlds leading youth lifestyle brands |

Patagonia Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers. Alpinism remains at the heart of a worldwide business that still makes clothes for climbing – as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, paddling and trail running. These are all silent sports. None requires a motor; none delivers the cheers of a crowd. In each sport, reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection between us and nature. Our values reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted. The approach we take towards product design demonstrates a bias for simplicity and utility. For us at Patagonia, a love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them, and to help reverse the steep decline in the overall environmental health of our planet. We donate our time, services and at least 1% of our sales to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups all over the world who work to help reverse the tide. We know that our business activity – from lighting stores to dyeing shirts – creates pollution as a by-product. So we work steadily to reduce those harms. We use recycled polyester in many of our clothes and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive, cotton. Staying true to our core values during thirty-plus years in business has helped us create a company we're proud to run and work for. And our focus on making the best products possible has brought us success in the marketplace.

Xcel Ed D’Ascoli founded Xcel in 1982, working from the bedroom of his Sunset Beach house. D’Ascoli found no shortage of inspiration from the world-class performances on display at his doorstep; and the opportunity to create and to connect high-performance products with the athletes who demanded them was irresistible. Xcel’s passionate focus on product development would become the defining characteristic of the brand.
Developing wetsuits in Hawaii came naturally to D’Ascoli, having grown up surfing New Jersey’s chilly Atlantic coasts. While temperate Hawaii waters rarely call for any more than 2mm neoprene, Sunset Beach and other North Shore breaks are incredibly challenging and demand world-class products for maximum performance.
Drawing upon his enthusiasm and experience helping establish Victory Wetsuits (Japan) as an international brand, D’Ascoli quickly laid the foundations of a core wetsuit company that would revolutionize the industry and push the cutting edge of material and design development.

Rusty Before 1984, no one had ever seen or heard of the “R-dot”—though they probably should have. At that time Rusty Preisendorfer was shaping surfboards under the Canyon label for 10 of the top 16 surfers in the world, including Occy and Shaun Tomson. Creating the simple yet powerful R-dot didn’t cross his mind until one of his riders, former world champion Peter Townend, suggested he develop his own, independent label. Every other sought-after shaper in the world had a logo, so Rusty figured PT had a point. And the rest, shall we say, is history.
Today the signature R-dot is one of the most powerful surfing insignias recognized around the world. Rusty International has become an icon in contemporary surf culture. Despite its size, however, Rusty is a brand that is incredibly grassroots—one that is adamant in reminding everyone that its heart and soul lies firmly in the custom, hand-shaped surfboard.
Rusty believes it is his insistence on communication and rider feedback that has led the surfing world to consider his work the Mercedes Benz of surfboards. And more importantly, this approach and reputation has given Rusty International the opportunity to embrace innovation. From the traditional blank to Surf CAD to Surf Tech, Aviso and Salomon, Rusty and his team of world-class shapers have accelerated the evolution of surfboard design infinitely. The result is consistent custom surfboards precisely crafted to each surfer’s needs—down to the thousandths of an inch. |

They weren't too worried about winning this football game or that contest. They were "team lost". Thus the name scribbled on books, t-shirts, benches, tables and eventually clothing. The Company has matured internally but continues to run off the same philosophy it started with. The Lost thinking now flows through its art, music, films, athletes and clothing" ...but that sounds like some PR firm wrote that for us. So Lost is whatever you think it is... |

C4 Waterman Inc. "A lot of people think that C4 is a stand-up company. It's not a stand-up company, it's a company based on a lifestyle.
What we cherish is the Hawaiian value system, things like friendship and family.
C4 stands for the core four things that we believe in: Balance, Endurance, Strength and Tradition; four things we need to use in life.
Balance is not just physical balance, it's mental balance, spiritual balance, and the roles we balance in life. Endurance: being able to outlast challenges: physical, mental, economic. Strength and tradition go hand in hand. Strong tradition. Our background, in being from Hawaii, whether by blood or by heart, means that tradition is at the heart of what we portray.
These values are what we are marketing, not boards. We are marketing our values through surfing and that's the part that's free. Respect the land, respect the ocean, respect your friends, neighbors, whoever is around.
It's not about flying a logo, it's about flying the core values and that's the message we want to spread to all in our extended ohana." - Brian Keaulana
